This past Tuesday, April 22nd, we celebrated Earth Day at our school. We decided ask some of our teachers what they are doing to help the students be more conscious of the environment. Check out our interview with Ms. Jessica (Grade 5B teacher) below. Interviewer: Are you doing something that can save the environment? Ms. Jessica: We may do something that helps save the environment, maybe we will discuss it in class! Interviewer: What do you think is something we can all do to help save the environment? Ms. Jessica: We can be conscious of our waste that we produce and we can try to recycle all of our juice containers that have now started coming in the cafeteria and making sure that we, maybe we can try rinsing those out and we can put them in the paper recycling bin so that they’re not creating as much garbage. What are you doing to help save the environment? It can be as simple as carrying a reusable water bottle around or bringing a litter-less lunch to school. Let us know in the comment section below! What is Open Day? Can you tell us about the event? Sure. Open Day is something Sunway schools hold twice a year, once in April and once in October and it’s a day we hold to attract new students and new parents into our school community. They come to our school twice a year and they hear about the good things that we think are happening in our school community and it helps them to become informed about where they wish to send their children to school. What are your hopes for Open Day? We hope for Open Day that we can inform our parents to come and the students to come and learn all of the good things happening at Sunway International School in Sunway, Iskandar. We want them to know about our school. We are proud of the things we do here and we hope that parents better understand the kind of education that they would get if they would send their children to our school. So of course we hope to have additional students enrolled in our school as a result of Open Day. But really, what I hope is that parents come and recognize how excellent our teachers are, how wonderful our students are, what a great parent community we have here, and what a great school community we have and we’re developing here. Are current SIS students participating in the event in any way? Yes, some of our older students are participating in the event. All our current students are invited to come if they wish. But our older students are acting as tour guides and helping at the reception desk. And it’s a good visible display to the new parents that come that our students are engaged and they are part of owning this school community. So it’s important to us that we include some of our students in our Open Day events. Thanks Principal Petitti for answering our questions about Open Day! Are you attending Open Day this Saturday, April 21? Let us know in the comment section below. We hope to see you there! On March 17, we celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day. Saint Patrick’s Day is a big celebration for everything to do with the country Ireland. This includes its people, art and culture (all the things Irish people like to do). Saint Patrick’s Day happens every year on March 17, which is the day Saint Patrick died. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and a well-known historic figure! Saint Patrick was important to the Irish people because it is said that he brought Christianity to Irish people. In Ireland, everybody has this day off from school and work. But Irish people are not the only ones who celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. In fact, people of different backgrounds in many parts of the world celebrate this day. People celebrate by having parades, wearing green clothes, and enjoying traditional Irish food and drinks. The most common Saint Patrick’s Day symbol is the shamrock, but symbols like the leprechaun and a pot-of-gold at the end of a rainbow are also connected to the day. Did you know? Although many people wear green on Saint Patrick’s Day, green was once thought to be an unlucky colour in Ireland! And nowadays one of the Irish traditions is to pinch anyone who is not wearing green on Saint Patrick’s Day! I hope you remembered to wear green!
