What is courage? Courage means doing the right thing even if it is hard to do. Courage also means facing your fears and being brave. Courage, much like the others virtues we have learned about this school year, often looks different from the outside to the way you would expect it to feel on the inside. So while having courage means that we learn to be brave as we meet new experiences or deal with difficult situations, it is normal to also experience feelings of fear, apprehension, or anxiety when you are showing courage or trying to be courageous. Have you ever felt this way before? Join us during the month of May as we try to better understand what are some ways we can show courage. We will also highlight some extraordinary acts of courage by people just like you and me! AuthorSWritten by Paul (5A), Awwal (4B), and Ms. Soltes.

We decided to ask one of our teachers about forgiveness! Ms. Danielle talked to us about what forgiveness means to her and also walked us through a strategy for how to forgive. In order to forgive we need to know how! And we think it's important to have more than one strategy to learn to do something better. Interviewers: What does forgiveness mean to you? Ms. Danielle: Forgiveness means to me that you accept what someone has done to you that was wrong. And they have accepted their responsibility but you’ve both learned from this mistake. And you move forward. Interviewers: What are your strategies for forgiveness? Ms. Danielle: First, you would talk to the person that did something wrong to you and ask them why, and then they would explain it to you and hopefully they would offer up an apology. Next, I would then ask them or explain to them how they hurt my feelings and that I didn’t appreciate what they had done or said. And then finally, we would come to some kind of decision that we could both settle on and hopefully this other person would apologize for what they did, and we could forget about it and continue on. Thank you Ms. Danielle! Do you have any strategies for forgiveness? We'd love to hear from you! If you have any questions, compliments, or concerns about this post, use the comment box below! (4A) Awwal (4B) and a little extra help from Nil (6B) (thank you Nil for letting us use your voice recorder!). Forgiveness (noun) (pronounced fərˈgivnəs): defined as the action or process of forgiving or being forgiven. (As defined by the New Oxford American Dictionary). What is forgiveness? Forgiveness is not a feeling, but a decision you have to make to let go. Letting go of what? Letting go of hard feelings such anger, frustration, or sadness that can happen when you or someone else makes a mistake. Forgiveness can start with saying “thank you” or “that is okay” when someone tells you they are sorry and not staying upset about what they did to upset you. It is important to understand that forgiving someone does not mean that all of a sudden what that someone did should not hurt anymore or is not wrong. It means, that you find it in yourself to give that individual another chance, or that you help your feelings move on. It is important to learn how to move on because if we can forgive we have energy to focus on more positive and useful things (like the stuff we are learning in school)! Forgiveness is closely related to other virtues like patience and understanding. It is important to be patient with yourself and others, and understand that no one is going to be perfect. We all make mistakes! What is someone keeps hurting me? Great question! Forgiveness does not mean that you should let someone hurt you over and over again. If someone hurts you over and over again it is important that you speak to an adult about the problem or what you are experiencing. Do you have any strategies for letting go?
